Two books that changed my perspective as a marketer

Marketers and business owners should read books.

No matter who we are and what we do, books inevitably fills our lives with more meaning and gives us insights on what happen in other people’s lives and even informing us of new developments happening around the world.

“A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies” – George Martin

One of my favorite quote is by Dr. Seus who said “The more you read, the more things you will know. The more you learn, the more places you’ll go”

It’s so true. When we read books, it broadens our imagination and transports us into the author’s world, fascinating us and instilling into us a passion to do more, do it differently, go and explore places, culture, people, and other passions. 

As a marketer, I’m happy that this realization came to me quite early in my career and since then I’ve made sure that I’ve invested my time reading books of all sorts.

Out of all the business related books I’ve read so far, I want to mention two books that have majorly changed my perspective on marketing and leadership and has helped me develop a big picture view before working on any marketing strategy.

If you’re a marketer or a business owner, I want to encourage you to buy these two books and read them. They are small books with few pages which you can easily finish in a couple of days. Even though they are short books, it gives an essence of the important marketing functions and helps build a solid foundation to start with.

Here is a brief description on the two books.

1. Start with Why – How Great Leaders Inspire Everyone to Take Action. – Simon Sinek

The first book I want to talk about is ‘Start with Why’ by Simon Sinek, an excellent book for marketers and businessmen who wants to build their business on the right note.

The book emphasizes the importance of asking the question ‘Why’, which I believe is crucial for any business that wants to succeed and keep expanding regardless of all the ups and downs.

The book explains why some people, organizations and brands are more innovative, influential and profitable than others.

As a marketer, this book was an eye-opener that helped me ask the most important question before starting on any new marketing project. It has definitely proved valuable in shaping my thinking towards the right direction.

2. Purple Cow – Transform your Business by Being Remarkable – Seth Godin

Seth Godin is one of my favorite authors and virtual mentor. I follow him on Twitter and regularly read his short yet enriching posts on his website ‘www.sethgodin.com‘.

The book ‘Purple Cow‘ is one of the best seller books by Seth Godin.

His idea of Marketing starts with the product itself.

According to him, the product is either remarkable or invisible and if the product is remarkable then it really doesn’t need to follow the traditional marketing mix approach, the four Ps (Product, Pricing, Promotion, Publicity).

In his book, he introduces the new P and that is the ‘Purple Cow’. You really need to read the book to know more about it.
